Liverpool 5-0 Swansea: five-star Reds triumph against Swans

Brilliance or bust, there is little in between for Liverpool. Earlier in the week Brendan Rodgers' side had been poor against both West Brom and Zenit St. Petersburg, losing both games by two goals, yet they put in a stellar display against a second-string Swansea side to win by five goals without reply.

The first-half saw Liverpool have chance after chance without converting, with a Steven Gerrard penalty needed to break the deadlock and ensure the Reds went in at half-time with the lead.

The goals came thick and fast in the second-half, with Philippe Coutinho scoring on his full debut before Enrique fired home from close range, Suarez ended a bad week in front of goal with a well worked effort and another penalty allowed Daniel Sturridge to wrap up and excellent show in front of goal from the Reds.

Brendan Rodgers handed a first Liverpool start to Philippe Coutinho, who signed for the Reds in the latter stages of the January transfer window but has seen his chances at Anfield limited due to fitness concerns, whilst Lucas Leiva returned to the side after being left out of the defeat to Zenit on Thursday.

It was deja vu for Liverpool as they squandered a number of chances in the first period, with the most glaring miss being a shot wide by Luis Suarez from close range after it looked like Daniel Sturridge had been brought down in the box.

Sturridge himself failed to capitalise on a clever through ball from Coutinho, with the former Chelsea striker not quick enough to react to the unexpected pass, resulting in Swans keeper Michel Vorm beating the January signing to the ball

It took Liverpool until the end of the first period to break the deadlock, with Suarez turning quickly and making a break down the line before Kemy Agustien brought down the Uruguayan, resulting in Howard Webb awarding a penalty which Steven Gerrard converted to give the hosts the lead.

Liverpool doubled their lead at the start of the second-half, with Coutinho, starting his first game from the Reds, scoring an impressive individual goal, dribbling through the Swansea defence before firing low past Vorm to open his goalscoring account at Anfield.

After Coutinho's individual display it was a well worked team effort which gave Liverpool their third moments later, with Jose Enrique cutting inside from the left, setting off a string of passes by the Reds which ended with Sturridge teeing up Enrique to fire home from close range.

The fourth came as Suarez took advantage of the Swansea back line affording him far too much space, with the Uruguayan wriggling around a number of Swans defenders before firing low past Vorm to get a goal which was deserved after an impressive performance from the striker.

Liverpool's fifth came as Wayne Routledge handled the ball in the box, forcing Howard Webb to once again point to the spot, but this time it was Sturridge, unlucky not to have scored earlier, who stepped up to take the penalty, clipping crossbar with his effort which left Vorm well beaten.
