LFC Scout Report: Wigan Athletic

By Ben Hardy

Liverpool make the short trip to the DW Stadium on Saturday as they look for their first win at Wigan in four attempts.

12 months ago Wigan were just about to embark on an incredible run that saved them from relegation. They find themselves in a similar position this year with just goal difference separating themselves and the bottom three.

Last week, Wigan produced an impressive 0-3 victory at Reading and Roberto Martinez will be hoping that that result can spur his team on to securing yet another season in England's elite division.

The Latics have a good recent record against Liverpool at home, denying them the victory on the last four occasions. With only one in six Premier LEague games, the Latics will be keen to deny Liverpool another victory.

Liverpool come into the game in good goal scoring form. Their last Premiership encounter saw them comprehensively beat Capital One Cup winners Swansea City by five goals where as they also put three past Zenit St Petersburg midweek as they crashed out of the Europa League.

Despite being knocked of Europe, their last game came on 21st February and Brendan Rogers squad will be fresh and raring to go after a short break.

Team News:

Defender Antolin Alcaraz could provide a boost for Wigan after returning from a long injury.

The Paraguay international has missed six months with a groin injury but could start after appearing as a substitute in the final minutes against Reading.

Winger Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) is close to full fitness after missing three months but isn't expected to feature against Liverpool.

Wigan's defensive woes could be settled as Emerson Boyce is also fit after recovering from a hamstring problem.

Key Players:

Arouna Kone looks to be the dangerman for Wigan at the moment as he has notched four goals in his last two appearances.

The Ivorian's brace last week against Reading took his goal tally into double figures and he could become a very important player if Wigan are to stay up.

Kone has lightning pace as well as a ferocious shot enabling him to run through defences and shoot towards goal with venom.

The game kicks off at 5:30 pm GMT on Saturday evening and will be shown live on ESPN in the UK from 4:30 pm GMT.

The Anfield Opinion will keep you up to date with all the latest post match action.
