Luis Suarez handed ten game ban by FA after biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic

Luis Suarez has been banned for ten games by the governing body of English football after the Uruguayan bit Branislav Ivanovic in Liverpool's clash with Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.

The striker immediately apologised to Ivanovic in the aftermath before being fined by Liverpool, with Suarez also accepting the charge of violent conduct placed on him by the Football Association.

The 26-year-old did however deny that the ban needed to be increased from the standard three matches that comes with a violent conduct charge.

An independent commission, however, upheld the view of the FA and banned the striker for ten games, which could see him not play football in England for five months.

The FA satated the following after the  announcement of the decision:

"Luis Suarez has been suspended for a total of ten matches after an Independent Regulatory Commission today ruled on a charge of violent conduct.

"A three-person Independent Regulatory Commission today upheld The FA’s claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect.

"This follows an incident with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in Sunday’s fixture at Anfield.

"The Liverpool forward had accepted a charge of violent conduct but had denied The FA’s claim that the standard three-match sanction was insufficient for the offence.

"The incident was not seen by the match officials and has therefore been retrospectively reviewed.

"Suarez has until midday on Friday 26 April to appeal the additional suspension, above the standard three matches."

Liverpool themselves released a statement in which managing director Ian Ayre claimed to be "shocked" and "disappointed" at the severity of the punishment handed down to the Reds number seven.

With the statement further going on to say that the club would await the reasoning behind the decision from the FA before any further comment was made by the club.
