Brendan Rodgers rules out Liverpool title challenge

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has suggested Liverpool are out of the race to win the Premier League title.

Brendan Rodgers on Liverpool title chances

The Reds have had a strong first five months in the league, which saw them go top of the table during the festive period.

And although the Anfield side suffered defeats at the hands of rivals Manchester City and Chelsea, a strong performance against Everton saw them sat two points above the Blues in fourth place.

But Rodgers feels the strength of the squads above Liverpool, most notably those of Manchester City and Chelsea, will keep the Merseyside outfit away from the title this season, with the key focus being on clinching a Champions League spot.

“I look at the squads that they [Chelsea and Manchester City] have and have built up over the last few years and it’s very difficult for us, even though we’ve competed right the way through this season,” Rodgers told Sky Sports News.

“I wouldn’t say that we’ll be challenging for it this year. Of course, we’ll play a part in it because we’re professional and we want to fight to finish as high as we possibly can.

“There are six points between us and Chelsea, there’s still a lot to play for and we’ll be fighting right to the very end.

“But if I’m asked to give an honest answer then I would say that this year is probably too soon for us.”
